B.C. records 2,090 new COVID-19 cases, 28 more deaths

British Columbia had 2,090 new COVID-19 cases over the Thanksgiving long weekend, which works out to an average of 523 per day.

The numbers included 603 cases on Oct. 9, 634 on Oct. 10, 468 on Oct. 11, and 385 today, Oct. 12.

Interior Health had 404 new cases (average of 101 per day), and now has 841 active cases, down 288 from Friday.

There are 5,183 active cases of COVID-19 in the province with 357 people in hospital and 153 in intensive care.

Fraser Health lead the province with 814 new cases, and now with 2,182 active cases.

Since Friday, 28 new deaths have been reported, for an overall total of 2,029.

The new deaths include: eight in Interior Health, seven in Northern Health, five in Fraser Health, three in Vancouver Coastal Health and five in Island Health.

As of today, 88.8 per cent of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 82.6 per cent have had both doses.

Starting Oct. 12, all visitors to long-term care and assisted-living facilities will need to show proof they have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Starting Oct. 26, all visitors to long-term care, assisted-living and acute-care facilities will need to show proof they are fully vaccinated with two doses of COVID-19 vaccine. Those who are not vaccinated will not be able to visit in these high-risk settings (excluding children 12 or under or those with an approved medical exemption).

There have been two new health-care facility outbreaks at West Shore Laylum and Evergreen Manor (Fraser Health), for a total of 19 active outbreaks.

Update on Interior Health outbreaks:

Cottonwoods Care Centre long-term care in Kelowna has 60 cases: 48 residents and 12 staff, with eight deaths connected to the outbreak.
Joseph Creek Village long-term care in Cranbrook has 15 cases: nine residents and six staff, with two deaths connected to the outbreak.
Overlander Long-Term Care in Kamloops has 27 cases: 21 residents and six staff with three deaths connected to the outbreak.
Village by the Station long-term care in Penticton has 32 cases: 18 residents and 14 staff with three deaths connected to the outbreak.
Haven Hill Care Centre long-term care in Penticton has eight cases: seven residents and one staff with one death connected to the outbreak.
