Foreign student drowns in Shuswap lake

Jul 29, 2021 | 8:30 PM

Tragedy for a foreign student studying in Canada.

RCMP say a 27-year-old man attempted to swim to a floating dock or raft in White Lake on July 28 and appeared to panic.

“The group the swimmer was with were non swimmers and they tried in vain to throw the male something that would help him float. It was at that point the swimmer went under the surface of the water and did not resurface,” Staff Sgt. Scott West of Salmon Arm RCMP said.

Shuswap Search and Rescue and Fire Services searched the area and did not locate the victim. The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team attended on Thursday, July 29, and recovered the man’s body.

“At this time the family and learning institution are aware of the incident and the tragic death of a son. The witnesses are being supported by grief counselors at the learning institution they are attending and the family of the victim is being supported by their consulate,” West said.

The drowning is under investigation by the BC Coroner Service.
