A Kamloops-based B.C. Supreme Court judge has earned a promotion.

Federal Justice Minister David Lametti announced the appointment of Len Marchand Jr. to the B.C. Court of Appeal Wednesday (Mar. 24).

After a 17-year career as a lawyer, Marchand was appointed a provincial judge in 2013 and elevated to the B.C. Supreme Court in 2017.

Marchand, who is a member of the Vernon-based Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB), is the son of Donna Par and the late Len Marchand, who was Canada’s first Indigenous Member of Parliament (1968) and first Indigenous cabinet minister (1976) under then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. The elder Marchand was born in Vernon and was also a member of the Okanagan Indian Band.

“This is truly an exciting announcement and I am so proud of Justice Marchand,” said OKIB Chief Byron Louis. “It fills me with pride to see a member achieve such high office. He proves that we
can all achieve great things through hard work, dedication, focus, and a desire to help others. Our congratulations go out to Len Marchand.”

The younger Marchand succeeds Justice H.M. Groberman on the B.C. Court of Appeal.
