Bench Road crash amps up debate

An accident last week (Feb. 18) on Bench Road in the Commonage has resulted in a flurry of contact to the City of Vernon about the road.

A Toyota Tundra truck pulling a twin-axle trailer went off the road on an icy curve and down an embankment. City crews shut the road down for a few hours.

“The residents on the road asked a number of questions; one is: it was a truck pulling a trailer, and the signs clearly say no trailers. And why is this road signed 50 kilometres an hour, when a similar road in Bella Vista, with a downhill corner is signed 30 kilometres an hour?,” Mayor Victor Cumming asked.

Residents noted the road is narrower, corners are tighter and road is consistently used by pick-up trucks pulling double-axle trailers contrary to signage.

“It would be like hooking fish in a barrel [issuing tickets]. The cost benefit analysis would be striking, if you [RCMP] spent an hour there in the morning and an hour in the evening,” Cumming added.

Staff will request RCMP increase enforcement on the road, and bring back a report regarding the posted speed limit on the road.
