End of the line for trees in Kin Beach Park

A number of trees are being chopped down at Kin Beach Park in Vernon for safety reasons.

Four trees were removed Tuesday and another three will be cut down today.

Christy Poirier, city communications manager, said city crews are removing some cottonwood trees that are aging and beginning to deteriorate.

“Some of the trees in the area are past their life expectancy. Removing the trees will help reduce hazards during storm events,” Poirier told Vernon Matters.

Poirier said cottonwoods grow rapidly when irrigated correctly, and therefore produce more shade faster.

“However, along with these characteristics, they can also get shallow root systems and weak wood. Shallower roots mean less stability than other mature trees, and weak wood can lead to branches falling during large wind storms or weather events.”

The removal of the trees is within the city’s 2021 operating budget.

As for planting new trees, Poirier said the city has done some succession planting in Kin Park, as cottonwoods have been removed over the last few years.

“A variety of tree types have been added to the area, including along Tronson Road near the washrooms. The trees that are being added to the park are of harder wood varieties,” Poirier remarked.
