Coldstream Ranchlands Park rustles up support

Coldstream Ranchlands Park is going into the Greater Vernon Natural Trails and Spaces master plan following acceptance of a staff report indicating that both archaeological and environmental reports determined there were no potential issues.

The mostly grassland property was more heavily used by hikers and naturalists this summer when B.C. Parks shutdown.

There are a few rough trails and no parking facilities, but that could change now that the reports have come back positive.

In May, an environmental impact study and an archaeological study were ordered to determine if there were any issues to creating a new park on the 135 hectare (334 acres) property on the north side of Buchanan Road in Coldstream, about 5 km from downtown Vernon.

“No archaeological resources were identified during the field investigation of the Coldstream Ranchlands Park and the potential for the presence of archaeological resources within the study area is low. No further archaeological work is recommended for the study area,” Rhory Gillies, archaeologist for Ursus Heritage Consulting, said.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) purchased the property in 2009.

The habitat boosts a plethora of flora and fauna, much of it unique to the region including rattle snakes and other species.

The terrain varies widely with steep rocky sections with rock outcrops, to more gently sloped areas.
