1,000-plus participant event in Vernon still on track despite COVID-19

It seems hard to fathom at this point, but a national sporting event with over 1,000 participants is still in the plans for next April in Vernon.

The Canadian Taekwon-Do Championships is proposed to bring over 500 competitors and another 500 volunteers to Kal Tire Place April 24 and 25, 2021.

David White from Sundance Martial Arts, the chair of the organizing committee, said local organizers and the sport’s national federation remain committed to the event taking place, despite the COVID pandemic.

“We are working with all of the other stakeholders as well as the Sports and Culture Society of the North Okanagan to ensure that backup protocols can be implemented should we have to alter the parameters of the event. We look forward to hosting a large and safe event that our community can be proud of,” White told Vernon Matters.

White said they hope to generate interest from sponsors, which he admits has been slow so far.

“We have had a couple of partners come forward to help us get the word out about the opportunities, including the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce. We look forward to working with local businesses so that everyone can benefit from Vernon hosting such a large and prestigious event,” White said.

The event, which features participants from ages 4 to 74 — from beginners to the top black belts — also serves as the selection for athletes to represent Canada at the 2021 International Taekwon-Do Federation World Championships in Finland.

The competition is expected to use about 400 hotel room nights throughout the event weekend.
