B.C. records 50 cases, one new death from COVID-19

There are 50 new COVID-19 cases across the province and one new death from the virus, B.C.’s top health officials reported Friday.

The joint statement from Health Minister Adrian Dix, Minister of Health and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said there are currently 278 active cases of the virus in the province while 3,168 people have recovered.

“Of the total COVID-19 cases, five individuals are hospitalized, two of whom are in intensive care,” they said.

Totals region by region include:

Vancouver Coast Health 1,088 cases
Fraser Health 1,889
Island Health 144
Interior Health 369
Northern Health 88
63 cases of people who reside outside of Canada

There has been one new COVID-19-related death in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, for a total of 195 deaths in British Columbia.

B.C.’s two top spokespersons also reported a new healthcare facility outbreak at Dania Home in the Fraser Health region.

“There are now two long-term care facilities and one acute-care facility with active outbreaks,” the provincial statement said. “There are no new community outbreaks.”

The province’s public health teams are still supporting active outbreaks on Haida Gwaii and at the Fraser Valley Packers business.

There continues to be additional community exposure events across the province. A full listing of community exposure events related to flights and others within each health authority is available through the BC Centre for Disease Control, as well as on health authority websites.

“This weekend, let’s play safe and stay safe while COVID-19 remains in our communities,” the provincial statement said. “We can make this B.C. Day holiday weekend one where we find the right balance: having those important social connections with our friends and family, while taking precautions to protect ourselves and those around us.”

Both Dix and Henry urged people to keep social groups small.

Earlier Friday, Interior Health announced nine new COVID-19 cases in the region.
