Vernon embarks on tourism recovery plan

Jun 10, 2020 | 5:35 AM

It’s hoped a $145,000 grant from the B.C. government can help woo tourists to Vernon.

Mayor Victor Cumming said Tourism Vernon was awarded the provincial funds which he believes are “really going to be helpful in our tourism recovery plan.”

Cumming said it will be challenging to restart the local tourism industry given the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent health restrictions have decimated tourism in B.C. and across Canada.

“In the past, our hotels were experiencing high occupancy rates and obviously that collapsed due to COVID-19. We also know that international travel has been significantly curtailed so that’s going to offer some very significant challenges for the tourism sector province-wide as well as in Vernon.”

Cumming expects Tourism Vernon to focus on attracting more B.C. residents to the North Okanagan.

“I think it’s a pretty significant focus on B.C.,” Cumming said of the recovery plan, adding people should take advantage of local tourist spots and activities in what is likely-to-be a quieter year for out-of-province and out-of-country visitors.
