Local business anxious during crisis

Greater Vernon Chamber rallies behind business

Local business owners and residents suffering anxiety during the COVID-19 outbreak can turn to the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce for online support.

At www.vernonchamber.ca, numerous resources are available to businesses and their employees, including links to the federal and provincial initiatives launched in recent days as well as assistance from Small Business BC, Community Futures North Okanagan and other organizations.

“We appreciate that COVID-19 is causing anxiety among business owners, particularly as many have never had to lay staff off before and they are seeing revenue declining,” Krystin Kempton, Greater Vernon Chamber president, said. “Also challenging is trying to track down relevant information, especially as government announcements about programs are made virtually every day.

“Our goal is to provide businesses with a central location with as up-to-date information as possible. We also want to assist businesses in connecting to the experts, whether it is in law, payroll or technology.”

Many businesses are adapting to the current circumstances and have initiated delivery and takeout options for food, groceries and other services. As a result, the Chamber has created a directory of takeout and delivery options at https://www.vernonchamber.ca/takeout/curbside

“It is important for residents to support their neighbours at this time and that includes their favourite restaurant or shop. The directory is being updated regularly and is open to all businesses,” Kempton said.

Other resources available on the Chamber website include remote working tools, online education platforms and updates from local government and health officials.

“The Chamber will continue to look at additional opportunities to support businesses and residents as we have been committed to the community since 1897. We are also working closely with the City of Vernon and Community Futures,” Kempton said.
