It is good news for people with breathing difficulties.

An air quality/road dust advisory for Vernon, issued last Thursday, has been lifted due to a decrease in road dust in the air.

The Environment Ministry says the conditions have improved across the region.

Air quality meteorologist Graham Veale said the provincial air quality objective for course particulate matter is 50 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3), averaged over 24 hours.

The reading in Vernon as of 12 p.m. Tuesday was 40 micrograms per cubic metre, while in Kelowna it was 14.6.

The dry weather over the past few days had led to a continuation of the road dust advisory for Vernon issued last week.

Thankfully, some showers are in the forecast.

High concentrations of coarse particulate matter are expected to persist until there is precipitation or dust suppression.

Levels tend to be highest around busy roads and industrial operations. This advisory is in effect until further notice.

Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous exercise near busy roads until the advisory is lifted.

Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.
