Trudeau touts benefits of $82 billion relief package

Mar 24, 2020 | 5:26 AM

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government will introduce an $82-billion bill today to help Canadians impacted by Covid-19.

The legislation will increase federal powers and provide financial relief to businesses and workers.

However, just minutes after the emergency sitting of Parliament started, the government House Leader asked that it be suspended.

It appears the government is still negotiating details of the emergency legislation that would provide financial aid to help Canadians affected by the Covid crisis.

The Conservatives have concerns it would give the government sweeping powers to spend, borrow and change taxation levels without Parliament’s approval.

Trudeau told his daily news conference outside his Ottawa home, no one knows how long the current restrictions will be in place.

He says the best thing people can do is stay home and follow the social distancing rules.

The PM added Canadians coming home from abroad must go directly home and self isolate, and not go get groceries or visit relatives first.
