Government reports 145 new COVID-19 cases in B.C.; total of 41 in Interior Health

Mar 24, 2020 | 8:17 AM

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said there have been 145 new confirmed coronavirus cases in the province since Sunday, bringing the total to 617.

In the Interior Health region there are now 41, up from 30 on Monday.

There have been no additional deaths, with that total still at 13.

Further good news is that 173, or 28 per cent of the cases, have fully recovered and have been released from quarantine.

There are 59 people in hospital, with 23 in Intensive Care.

Dr. Henry says they are working to have long term care workers assigned to a specific home, so they are not going from one to another.  She is also advising all health practitioners to limit their practices to emergencies only.

As for testing, Dr. Henry says they have a specific testing policy in place and that includes community cases where the source of the infection isn’t known.  Almost 30,000 tests have been done so far. When tests are done, it’s based on what they have learned from other countries.

As for the increasing numbers, the majority are on the Lower Mainland, but no community is safe from COVID-19, so Dr. Henry said physical distancing is the way to help stop the spread.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said they are doing 3,500 tests each day and he thanked the health care professionals and those who are processing the tests for their dedication.  He said thousands of people are using the resources available at the BC Centre for Disease Control website.

Dix said the measures we are taking now, will help us all in the long run but he expects the next few weeks to be very difficult.
