Social distancing measures taken

Vernon councillors spread out

Social distancing measures were taken at the regular Vernon city council meeting on Monday afternoon.

All the chairs had to be at least six metres apart, with signs saying that on each chair.

About 17 people attended the meeting, including council members, city staff, media and two members of the public.

“You can see we are keeping a physical distance from each other. We appreciate you all doing the same following the directives of the province,” said Mayor Victor Cumming

While some questioned holding a meeting during the COVID crisis, city staff said it was required under provincial legislation.

“In order for a council meeting to be cancelled or postponed, you have to have a meeting of council to postpone or cancel those meetings, said Patti Bridal, director, corporate services with the city.

Just over half of Vernon city council attended the session, including Mayor Victor Cumming and councillors Akbal Mund, Kari Gares and Brian Quiring.

Councillors Dalvir Nahal, Kelly Fehr and Scott Anderson were not present.

Future council meetings are to be postponed due to the crisis.

“The chair will call the meetings back to order at an appropriate time,” said Patti Bridal, director, corporate services with the city,” said Bridal.
