UPDATE: Smoke northwest of Vernon

Mar 23, 2020 | 12:14 PM

UPDATE March 23

The B.C. Wildfire Service said it did not respond to this incident, so it was not able to provide any further information on it.

“Open burning is common at this time of year, and it is possible this is what it could have been,” said Taylor MacDonald, communications specialist with the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Nick Nilsen, communications with the Okanagan Indian Band, said there was a controlled burn with forestry officials and OKIB fire, getting rid of fine fuels.

“Our territorial stewardship staff were also doing some burning but I’m not aware of the scale of that work.”

A lot of smoke is giving some North Okanagan residents more reason to be anxious, other than for COVID-19-related issues.

It’s coming from the Westside Road area, northwest of Vernon.

Vernon Matters staff drove out to the site Saturday afternoon where what looked like several piles of stumps were burning.

No emergency crews were seen at the site at that time, and people were pulling over to take a look.

Vernon Matters has reached out to the B.C. Wildfire Service for information.
