Mar 17, 2020 | 1:14 PM

Vernon’s Recreation Centre and other city-run sporting venues are closing on Wednesday due to the coronovirus pandemic.

The City has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) Level 2, allowing it to coordinate its emergency response efforts.

Following the announcement of significant COVID-19 response measures by the provincial and federal governments on Monday, the EOC management team has ordered the following steps to help contain the spread of infection in the community.

Effective Wednesday, March 18, at 11:59 p.m., all city recreation facilities will be closed until further notice.

Impacted facilities include:

  • Vernon Recreation Centre
  • Vernon Aquatic Centre
  • Dogwood Gym
  • Creekside Conference Centre (Auditorium)
  • Halina 50+ Activity Centre
  • Priest Valley Arena
  • Priest Valley Gym
  • Vernon Boxing Club
  • Kal Tire Place
  • Kal Tire Place North
  • Lakers Clubhouse

Recreation rentals and bookings will be cancelled or postponed, and refunds or credits will be issued.

There will be refunds or credits given for all cancelled recreation programs, lessons, camps and activities.

Recreation passes will not be refunded, but will be extended.

All in-person, city-sponsored public engagement events have been cancelled.

Despite the measures, the city remains open for business.

People are asked to call or email where possible.

Anyone who needs to visit a city facility is asked to practice social distancing of at least two meters.

Anyone who is sick or has been around someone who is sick, or has returned from out-of-country travel within the last 14 days is asked not to enter a city facility.

Meanwhile, the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives closed its doors to the public Tuesday.
