SilverStar gets approval for resort association

The province has given it approval for the creation of the SilverStar Mountain Resort Association.

It’s the fourth such designation in B.C, joining Sun Peaks, Red Mountain and Whistler.

“Resort associations help promote, facilitate and encourage the development, maintenance and operation of resorts,” a news release from B.C.’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing said. “Resort associations collect a fee from property owners within the designated resort area who use their property for rental, business or commercial purposes.”

The funds from the fee are used to market the resort.

The province said the proposal has the support of the Regional District of North Okanagan, which is the local government where it’s located, and from at least 50 per cent of the landowners within the resort association boundaries, representing 50 per cent of the property value.

The other requirement met was having a ski lift and year-round recreational area centre.

The proposal submitted by the SilverStar Marketing Task Force – a group of interested stakeholders, including individual property owners, businesses, hotels and the resort operator – met the legislative requirements under the Resort Association Act to establish a resort association.

“The next steps are for the SilverStar Marketing Task Force to register the resort association in B.C. with the registrar of companies and elect its first board of directors in order to begin operations,” the release stated.
