Vipers comeback falls short against Wild; series tied

Mar 1, 2020 | 9:33 PM

It went right down to the wire.

The Wenatchee Wild got two second period goals and then hung on to defeat the Vernon Vipers 2-1 Sunday night.

The result tied up the first round BCHL series at 1, with the scene now switching to Vernon for games 3 and 4 Tuesday and Wednesday.

Matt Kowalski made it close, scoring for Vernon with 1:02 left in regulation time with the goalie pulled, and despite a couple of good chances in the dying seconds, Vernon could not beat Daniel Chenard and force overtime.

According to the shot clock, the Vipers only managed two shots in the final period for a game total of 15, while the Wild had three for 21 on Reilly Herbst.

Vipers head coach Jason McKee says his team’s “compete level” was good.

“We played hard again. There was a couple of poor decisions that hurt us. Six penalties is way too much at this time of year. That’s 12 minutes we had to kill off,” McKee said.

Attendance at the Town Toyota Centre was 1,499.

Elsewhere Sunday, Penticton dumped West Kelowna 9-2 to give the Vees a commanding 3-0 series lead.

Salmon Arm leads Victoria 2-0 in their series and Trail is up 2-0 on Prince George, the defending league champs.
