Class gets top marks for reducing plastics

A Grade 5 class at Kidston Elementary in Coldstream is taking a leadership role in the growing movement toward using less plastics.

Charlene O’Brien’s class spearheaded a plastic-free celebration on Valentine’s Day, leading to other schools following suit.

“As Valentine’s Day approached, the class looked into the amount of single-use plastic the day produces,” a news release from Martiza Reilly from School District 22’s communications department. “Last year, students collected approximately 1,000 pieces of single-use plastic generated from all the classes at Kidston and estimated that three to five times that amount went home with students. The students were shocked to think of the thousands of pieces of single-use plastics that could come from one school, in one day.”

The students challenged their school and other schools in the district and province, to have a plastic-free Valentine’s Day.

“To their surprise, many classes and schools in the district, including some schools in Maple Ridge and Revelstoke, took them up on their challenge,” Reilly added.

While many students still handed out cards or snacks, they were conscious of not bringing plastic bags of candy, or treats wrapped in plastic.

Mrs. O’Brien’s class also celebrated with their friends from Mrs. Strilchuk’s class and brought in fruit to share for a large fruit salad.

The students are now encouraging District Parent Advisory Councils and principals to follow Kidston’s lead in eliminating single-use plastics at all school events and concessions.

“We don’t have garbage cans in our class,” said Kobe, a student in the class. “We recycle or compost everything!”
