Group encourages students to take part in climate rally

Feb 25, 2020 | 2:46 PM

Students in the Vernon area are planning a walkout to protest the lack of climate action.

Earth Strike Vernon, a youth-led group, is inviting students and allies to stand for climate justice at an event Friday, March 6 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Vernon courthouse.

Municipal organizer Taylor Louis said organizers expect to see a “decent number of students” turn out for their first school strike in many months.

“The time to act is now, and that is what we intend to do,” Louis said. “The protest will be a peaceful show of support for immediate climate action. Time is running out to tackle the climate crisis. In response, youth across the world are continuing to step up to put pressure on those who are in positions to act.”

Louis said despite the group taking an extended period of rest throughout much of the winter, they haven’t given up the fight, noting a protest was held Feb. 23.

Earth Strike Vernon is a democratic climate action group organized by youth in Vernon, and is a municipal chapter of the larger Earth Strike International, an organization devoted to climate justice.
