The dangers of teen dating

Feb 21, 2020 | 5:15 AM

A presentation to raise awareness about teen dating violence and sexual assault will be held next week at Kalamalka Secondary in Coldstream.

It is been hosted by the Kal Parent Advisory Council as part of National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month in February.

“Together, we can raise awareness about teen dating violence and sexual assault and promote safe, healthy relationships,” said Kal PAC President Kelli Sullivan.

The free presentation called Talking to Your Teen about Healthy Relationships is facilitated by Archway Society for Domestic Peace, one of several school-based presentations focused on children and youth offered by the society.

In Canada, girls between the ages of 14 and 24 are most vulnerable to sexual assault.

“Early education programs can have a critical impact on building healthy relationships,” said Micki Materi, co-executive Director of Archway Society for Domestic Peace. “We are pleased to partner with Kal PAC to host this event as parents and other adults can make a real difference by reaching out to young people in simple ways.”

The presentation will offer parents and adults tips for talking to teens about healthy relationships, sexual activity and consent. Parents will also learn about the warning signs of dating violence and what to do if your child is sexually assaulted.

The presentation gets underway at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 at Kal Secondary School and is open to all School District 22 parents and interested adults.
