‘The barricades must come down now’: Prime Minister Trudeau

Feb 21, 2020 | 1:10 PM

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has updated the country on the rail blockades by pipeline protestors, saying very bluntly “the barricades must now come down.”

Trudeau told a news conference the current situation has gone on for two weeks and is unacceptable.

He said every attempt at dialogue has been made with the protestors, but the discussions have not been productive.

“We have gone through exhausting every possibility for dialogue, for engagement, for finding a peaceful solution to de-escalate this every step of the way. And we remain open to that, but we are waiting for Indigenous leadership to show that they also understand. The onus is on them. We will be there to discuss, but the barricades must come down,” Trudeau said.

He added he hopes the blockades can be removed peacefully, and says the onus is now on the Indigenous leaders to obey the law.

Reports say RCMP appear ready to move in on at least one site in Quebec.

Blockades by supporters of Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs who oppose a natural gas pipeline in northern B.C., have had a major impact on rail service and businesses in Canada.

Wet’suwet’en leaders are expected to respond in a news conference later today.
