The North Okanagan-Shuswap Member of Parliament has taken on a larger role on the committee he serves on in Ottawa.

Mel Arnold of the Conservatives has been elected as one of two vice-chairs of the standing committee on fisheries and oceans, which he has served on as a member since 2016.

The committee studies and reports on matters related to the federal role in the management of Canada’s fisheries and the safeguarding of its waters.

Arnold, a second term MP, said he’s honoured to receive the support from his peers.

“The committee has the capacity to perform valuable work benefiting Canada’s fisheries, ocean resources and the Canadians and communities that rely upon them. I sincerely hope that all members will work constructively and professionally as we did in the previous Parliament to protect, restore and enhance Canada’s fisheries and ocean resources,” he said.

Arnold said in a news release he looks forward to supporting the chair and fellow members in conducting meaningful studies and developing recommendations to government supporting “the robust management of Canada’s vast and diverse fisheries and ocean resources and the Canadian Coast Guard.”

The 12-person committee ls chaired by Liberal Ken McDonald of Newfoundland and Labrador, while Marilene Gill of the Bloc Quebecois is the other vice-chair.
