City of Vernon bags broomball bragging rights with win over Beach Radio

Feb 14, 2020 | 4:29 PM

How sweep it was!

The City of Vernon is celebrating back to back championships of the Winter Carnival broomball tournament.

A youthful, energetic and skilled city squad held off the Beach Radio Brawlers 3-1 in the championship game in the Village Green Hotel parking lot Friday.

The City of Vernon would have scored here if not for a scinitilating stop from Randy Todosychuk!

Logan Massie led the city with all three goals, while Akbal ‘Luongo’ Mund got the win in net, helped out by his team’s stifling defence.

Mayor Victor Cumming looked a bit like Borje Salming, donning a 1970’s style helmet as he raced around the site for the savvy city side.

Randy Todosychuk was brought in as a “ringer” in goal for Beach Radio — and he probably wished he stayed home.

Todosychuk faced an “estimated” 229 shots on net, but was a star, making many sparkling saves, and kept the score respectable.

Aryana Jacura was a force for the Brawlers — spoiling Mund’s pre-match prediction of a shutout — after earlier scoring twice in a 3-1 win over the Morning Star on Wednesday to open the four team tournament.

Thank you to Peter Kaz of the Village Green Hotel for hosting the tournament and refereeing.
