Vernon adds biking and micromobility infrastructure

Feb 12, 2020 | 5:10 AM

Vernon council has approved measures to make the city more cycling and micromobility friendly.

The city will install temporary on-street bike parking corrals at two sites on 30th Avenue, at 30th Street and 34th Street.

Mayor Victor Cumming says making the facilities temporary, instead of permanent, will allow the sites to be used for vehicle parking in the winter.

“I think those parking spots are in demand during the winter for vehicles. And I think the bike use of those is pretty heavy from mid May through to late September, so I just wanted to recognize the dual use of the same spot.”

Cumming says if people start using bikes more downtown in the future, council could revisit making the corrals permanent.

The city will also seek interest from companies to operate a micromobility pilot project for electric scooters, skateboards and shared bicycles.

Councillor Akbal Mund thinks cycling and other forms of getting around will become more popular as time goes by.

“With the Rail Trail being developed along 30th from the north end of town, from the mall, all the way to the trail, I think it’s important we have places for people to stop. As tourists come here they are going to want to check out the downtown, and if they’re riding bikes from the hotels — possibly electric scooters — you’ve got to have places to park those bikes,” Mund told Vernon Matters.

The cost to re-install the two bike parking corrals annually would include hoarding permit fees and labour for installation and removal, totalling about $1,200 per year according to staff.

The Downtown Vernon Association sent a letter to the city in December, requesting the city’s support to improve cycling infrastructure downtown and to help build a cycling culture in Vernon.
