Mission offers prizes as part of fundraiser

A Vernon charity is getting creative with its fundraising as it marks 40 years of service.

The Upper Room Mission is holding a raffle fundraiser with donors being eligible for prizes including a week’s accommodation in Las Vegas.

General Nanager Naomi Rouck said donations tend to drop off after Christmas for most charities.

“The Upper Room Mission is no exception. As a result, we need to find more creative ways to bring in money to keep our charity’s doors open and keep serving food to our community’s hungry,” she said.

Rouck said the Mission does not receive government funding and relies on donations and community support to operate.

“It’s the same community support that makes this raffle possible. SilverStar Mountain Resort generously offered a two-night stay and ski package to the raffle,” she said. “The Riviera Village Green Hotel was also quick to offer a one-night staycation for two at their renowned resort, and the Vernon Golf and Country Club offered two rounds of golf.”

Long-time Mission supporters The Fig Bistro — which donated 270 litres of soup valued at $3,775 to the Mission last year — also contributed with a meal for two.

“Our partners have rallied around us for this campaign,” Rouck said. “This fundraiser will allow us to continue the work we have been doing in the community for the past 40 years. For us at the Mission, it’s all about love to share, faith to believe, courage to overcome, and hope to see beyond.”

Tickets for the fundraiser are $50 and are available at the Upper Room Mission until the Feb. 28 draw at 1 p.m., which will be live-streamed to the Mission’s Facebook page. Chances are 1 in 400 (total tickets for sale) to win a grand prize.
