UPDATE: Mudslide site deemed ‘stable and safe;’ evacuation order lifted

Feb 3, 2020 | 2:00 PM

UPDATE

A precautionary evacuation has been lifted for residents who had to leave their homes in Vernon’s Middleton Mountain over the weekend due to a small mudslide.

Six townhomes on Mt. Robson Place were evacuated Saturday afternoon after water and mud came down a hillside, with no damage or injuries reported.

A geo-technical engineer was secured to assess the situation.

“According to the engineer’s report, the topsoil on the hillside became saturated when a large amount of snow melted very quickly. This caused the slide,” said Fire Chief David Lind. “The engineer has completed a comprehensive assessment of the area and a series of mitigation measures were recommended to the strata developer in order to direct any future mud flows away from the buildings and improve hillside drainage.”

Today, Vernon Fire Rescue received confirmation that the developer has put those measures in place and the engineer has confirmed the site is stable and safe for residents to return to the area.

“There is a possibility some topsoil may still run down the slope and need to be cleaned up,” said Lind, “but with confirmation that the site is safe, the precautionary evacuation has been lifted.”

Affected residents received assistance from Emergency Support Services while they were under evacuation.

Fire Rescue is waiting for a geo-technical engineer’s report on the stability of the hillside in that area before deciding what happens next.

“That report will determine next steps. At this point in time, the precautionary evacuation is still in place,” Christy Poirier, manager of communications with the City of Vernon told Vernon Matters.

The evacuation notice was put in place Saturday afternoon for six homes on Mount Robson Place after mud and water came down the hill, causing no damage or injuries.

The impacted residents are being cared for by Emergency Support Services.

Six homes have been evacuated as a precaution after small mud slide in Vernon’s Middleton Mountain area.

Vernon Fire Rescue responded to reports of water and mud sliding down the hill on Mount Robson Place around 2 p.m. Saturday.

“As a precaution, six units were evacuated,” said Fire Chief David Lind. “There were no injuries reported due to the slide and no structures were immediately involved. The residents have received assistance from Emergency Support Services and have been provided food and accommodations for the night.”

A geotechnical engineer is now assessing the hillside.

Lind said the topsoil is sloughing which is expected to cause a mess for a short time, but there is no immediate risk to people in the area.
