Rail trail erosion mitigation continues Feb. 10

Jan 31, 2020 | 1:37 PM

After past flooding on Kalamalka Lake led to high water levels causing serious erosion to the Okanagan Rail Trail, sections of the trail will be undergoing erosion mitigation work starting Feb. 10, 2020.

According to the Regional District of the North Okanagan, trucks will be hauling away rock and debris through the Kekuli Bay trail access. The impacted parts of the trail, stretching from Keluli Bay Park at KM 12.5 to KM 7.5 will be closed until 5p.m. weekdays.

But the trail undergoing the erosion mitigation work will remain open on weekends, and signage will be placed to advise visitors of the time change.

The entire project is weather dependent but the regional district estimates the entire project will take eight weeks to complete.

Those hoping to use the trail are advised to access the regional district portions of the trail from the Kick Willie access point to avoid disruptions. Residents are encouraged to visit www.rdno/ca/ORTwork to get a detailed map of the closures.

The region district hopes to get all erosion mitigation work completed before the spring.

The first phase of erosion mitigation work took place in Sept. 2019.
