Regional district to say ‘action’ on extra film funds at later date

The Okanagan Film Commission could see a boost in their
annual contribution from the Regional District of the North Okanagan, but the district isn’t ready to say ‘action’ just yet.

Instead, preliminary approval was given for a $10,000 increase to the film commission’s annual contribution.

At the RDNO board meeting Wednesday, director Jim Garlick noted some financial discrepancies during the commission’s presentation to the board in December.

“The totals when they came and presented, they didn’t really line up,” Garlick said.

“I would like to see some numbers given as to what they truly are,” he added.

The final go-ahead for funding will now take place during budget deliberations in a few weeks.

Since 2015, the regional district has provided $33,000 to the Okanagan Film Commission.

If the increase is approved, the commission will receive a total of $43,000 in 2020.

In December, Jon Summerland with the commission appeared as a delegation to request the $10,000 increase so the organization can hire an assistant.

Interest in the Okanagan Valley for film shoots has grown significantly, according to Summerland, and an assistant would help with the workload.

“I need an assistant at least three days a week because when I get scripts and break them down, now i’m with clients and things slip through the cracks. We could be doing a better job than what we are doing now but it’s just a one man show,” he said

According to the Okanagan Film Commission, the film industry injected $23 million into the local economy last year through the production of films, commercials and television shows.
