‘People feel the cold and they get it’: Community applauded for helping homeless during cold weather response

A group that works with Vernon’s homeless says the community support has been outstanding during the current cold snap.

“I think people feel the cold, and they get it,” Josh Winquist, the director of public relations for Turning Points Collaborative Society, said. “They know there are people that are either absolutely homeless, or are on the verge of being homeless, or they are sleeping rough, and the community has recognized there is a need to help these people. They have really stepped up.”

Winquist said the amount of donations has been “incredible.”

“You hear stories of regular citizens going out with coffee and hot chocolate and giving it to anybody that looks as though they might need a hand to keep warm,” he said.

It appears no one has been left out in the cold during the current cold snap, which appears to be nearing an end.

In addition to nearly full shelters, outreach workers with Turning Points Collaborative make daily checks for the some homeless residents, who for whatever reason, have decided not to use the shelters.

“What our outreach workers have found is that people who tend to be absolutely homeless and stay out camping, they’re not at their sites. So it suggests they have moved in somewhere. It’s not necessarily the shelters,” he said.

Winquist said they may have moved in with family or put some money together and gone to a hotel.

“But there are fewer people staying out in the cold, so that’s good news,” he said.

The society added seven temporary winter shelter spaces this week to meet the extra demand during the cold weather.

“That appears to have done the trick to get the people in,” Winquist said.
