Unwanted house guest caught in act

Jan 16, 2020 | 2:40 PM

A Vernon homeowner was stunned to return home and find a man trying to steal household items.

The resident of Black Rock Road came inside his house around 1 p.m. Wednesday and heard someone on the upper floor.

“Believing the noise was caused by a family member, the homeowner was not too concerned,” RCMP Cpl. Tania Finn said. “The homeowner was shocked to see an unknown man come down the staircase carrying two bags.”

The man dropped one of the bags and walked out the door when confronted, but police were able to find him by following tracks in the snow.

He was found hiding in a snowbank near a shed on a nearby property.

“The one good thing about all this freshly fallen snow is it made it relatively easy for our frontline officers to follow the suspect,” Finn said.

A 47-year old man of no fixed address was charged with break, enter and theft.

The homeowner’s property was recovered by police.
