‘Crews working hard’ to clear snow and ice: City of Vernon

Jan 15, 2020 | 12:11 PM

City of Vernon administration says the winter conditions this week have made clearing ice from roads around the North Okanagan more of a challenge.

Communications manager Christy Poirier says city staff have been doing the best they can, given the conditions.

“City of Vernon road crews have been working hard to clear snow and address icy sections,” Poirier said in an email to Vernon Matters. “The challenge we are experiencing this week is the frigid temperatures that make ice control a bit more challenging. Staff are assessing road conditions across the city on a regular basis to identify problem areas and determine where ice control is required.”

Poirier added crews are focused on sanding operations enhanced by pre-treating the sand with liquid de-icer to maximize its bond to the road surface.

Along with those initiatives, Poirier said motorists should continue driving to conditions.

“We all need to ensure we slow down, give ourselves extra room between vehicles and give ourselves extra time to reach our destinations. By taking it a little easier while driving, we give ourselves more time to be able to react to unexpected situations on the road,” Poirier added.
