Jan 13, 2020 | 1:26 PM

UPDATE

Vernon council has approved two more applications for recreational cannabis stores in the city.

One in the Fruit Union Plaza at 3101 Highway 6, called Cannabis Cowboys, was supported by everyone on council except Dalvilr Nahal who was concerned it was too close to the Blair Apartments supportive housing complex on 28th Ave.

The other application proposed for the retail complex in the 1800 block of Kalamalka Lake Road near the Polson Mall received unanimous approval from council.

The applications next to go the B.C. government for consideration of licenses.

Original story

Vernon already has a number of pot shops and more could be on the way.

City council will consider two more applications for recreational cannabis stores at its meeting this afternoon.

One is in the 1800 block of Kalamalka Lake Road in the complex just south of the Polson Mall, and the other is in the Fruit Union Plaza at 3101 Highway 6.

“The cannabis business licence application was referred to 19 staff in various departments and external agencies as well as 61 business, property owners and occupants within 30 metres of the subject property,” Craig Broderick the manager current planning said in a report to council on the Kal Lake Road application. “A total of five responses were received. Three responses were in support, one indicating no objection and one in opposition.”

City staff recommend council support both applications which still require provincial approval.

“RCMP and bylaw compliance have indicated that they have no objections,” Broderick said on the Fruit Union Plaza application. “As part of the process for this application to not be considered subject to the six application limit within the BlA, the property owner and the Downtown Vernon Association submitted letters of support for the application.”
