An aspiring Vernon singer hopes a viral YouTube video with his father, will help launch his career in music.

A video by Justin J. Moore and his dad Paul Moore singing the Ed Sheeran/Andrea Bocelli version of Perfect has generated over 47,000 views on the social media site so far.

Nineteen-year old Justin, who was raised in Vernon and currently lives in Kelowna, says it seems to have struck a chord with people, figuratively and literally.

“Everyone knows the song. Everybody knows Ed Sheeran. Most people know Andrea Bocelli, and so all the pieces just kind of fit together for us,” Justin told Vernon Matters.

Justin, a business student at Okanagan College in Kelowna, which he calls his “foundation/back-up plan” said the exposure gives him credibility in the music industry.

“It’s a key kind of indicator that people do connect with my voice, and that I actually am marketable in that sense. Now nobody can say I haven’t done anything because at least I’ve had one semi-successful video that’s really connected with a lot of people.”

The younger Moore, who is a freelance vocalist and producer, admits the father-son connection on the video, is an important part of its success.

“It really touches people’s hearts I think, to see that bond.”

Moore’s voice talents come naturally as his parents, Paul Moore of Armstrong, and Melina Schein of Vernon, are both Juillard-trained vocalists.

Justin said he was home for the holidays and he and his dad weren’t doing much, so they decided to use the mobile recording studio he had set up in their garage.

“We had been talking about doing something like this forever, and it was just a given that he was going to want to do it. So we picked a song — we had this song in mind for a long time — and then we both hopped in and did a couple takes, and it didn’t take very long. He had his coffee the whole time — he was drinking coffee while we were doing it — so it was just super relaxed. We just love doing stuff like that.”

One YouTube user commented: “We have played this song over and over, and each time we thrill to every note. There are no words to describe our feelings, and we love the personal touches that make this so both of you.”

Another wrote: “Beautifully done. I really enjoy the original, but you guys are better! I’m telling all I know!”

Justin, who uses the J. in his name to differentiate from the country singer of the same name, says he’s planning a follow-up video with his dad, plus one with mom Melina on the song The Prayer, which could be used as a fundraiser.

“I’ve noticed that if all these people were taking some kind of action on the video, that we might be able to do some real good with it. This time we’re going to raise money for something. We’re thinking possibly the fires in Australia but also possibly something more local.”
