New park highlights city’s capital plans

The City of Vernon is planning millions of dollars in capital projects next year.

The list was released as part of city council finalizing its 2020 budget with a 4.91 per cent tax increase which is $73 for the average homeowner.

One of the major projects is a new park on the Civic Arena site for two million dollars.

Another key initiative is completing a new new north-south link through the city.

A project to finish the 29th and 30th Street extension was in this year’s budget but was delayed to 2020.

It will also include a multi-use path connection at 39th Avenue.

Some other interesting parts of the budget include adding a drainage engineer to city staff to improve storm water issues and encourage sustainable infrastructure.

The city will also buy a vacuum street sweeper which will improve the street cleaning program and dust control, reducing the need for air quality warnings.

Here are some of the other larger capital projects:

– 32nd Avenue reconstruction between 33rd Street and 35th Street to rehabilitate approximately 285 metres of road, with water main, storm sewer and sanitary sewer replacement – $1.95m

– Replacement of the existing Okanagan Landing Road sewer force main from Tronson Road to the Vernon Water Reclamation Centre to accommodate increased flow due to development – $1.8m

– The completion of upgrades on Pleasant Valley Road including road reconstruction, new curbs and gutters, sidewalks, a new storm main and outfall into BX Creek, and safety improvements to the 48th Avenue intersection – $1.01m

– Priority intersection improvements at various locations in the city – $610k.
