Start of cultural centre may not be until 2022

A local politician says it could be another two years before construction starts on Greater Vernon’s proposed cultural centre.

Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chair Akbal Mund says the downtown site on 30th Street has to be prepared, including hydro lines having to be moved underground.

“I’m going to say construction is at least two years out. There is a lot of other things that need to be done especially getting the property ready. Underground hydro lines run through that alleyway in the parking lot. Those will definitely have to be the first priority, to bury them,” Mund told Vernon Matters.

Local politicians also want most of the 40 million dollar cost in place before anything starts, with about $15 million still to be secured through grants and fundraising.

Mund says the GVAC committee will be working on getting the business plan and marketing in place for the centre slated for the former Coldstream Hotel site on 30th Street.

The facility would house the Vernon Public Art Gallery, Greater Vernon Museum and other multi-use space.

Voters approved borrowing up to $25 million for the facility in a referendum in November 2018.

Mund says the committee is still waiting on a federal grant application for 23.5 million dollars.
