GVAC chair ‘betting’ on Kin Race Track site for new facility

The site for a proposed Greater Vernon active living centre hasn’t been determined, but a local politician says the choice seems obvious.

Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chair Akbal Mund says the former Kin Race Track land on 43rd Avenue next to Kal Tire Place, is probably where it needs to go, adding he is not aware of any other site at this point.

“If i was a betting man, I would probably put my money down on that site. I know the site has not officially been determined, but I think everybody realizes this probably is the site it needs to be at,” Mund told Vernon Matters.

The city cleared all the horse-related structures from the former horse-racing site, which is owned by the city, earlier this year.

Input is still being gathered on what the public would like to see in an active living centre such as an aquatic facility and gymnasium.

A consulting firm has been working to determine what amenities and features the public wants, and what the cost could be, with a report on that to be presented to local government in the new year.

“There is no other site that has been made aware to me. I know Coldstream has said ‘Don’t forget to look at the possibilities out in our area,’ but I don’t know of any specific sites that have been presented to GVAC at this time,” Mund added.
