Dedicated volunteer group continues support for charity

Dec 9, 2019 | 2:58 PM

Plenty of bulbs are being lit on the tree atop Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

The VJH Hospital Foundation’s 32nd annual Light A Bulb campaign for new equipment at VJH has raised over $150,000 since launching last month.

A big part of that has come from the Armstrong Spallumcheen Healthcare Auxiliary which has donated $40,000 to the campaign.

“Solely operated by more than 65 dedicated volunteers, the Armstrong Spallumcheen Healthcare Auxiliary (ASHA) is a fixture in this vibrant community,” a news release from Bree Cawley, communications officer with the Hospital Foundation, said. “The auxiliary, which originated over 85 years ago, runs the extremely popular Bargain Bin thrift store in Armstrong. Locals from around the valley make special trips to donate, shop and volunteer at the store which is open from Tuesday through Saturday each week.”

The energetic team of volunteers has been donating to the Light a Bulb campaign since 1996.

“People come from all over the Okanagan, partly because they know that we’re all volunteers,” Marge Burtch, Bargain Bin coordinator, said. “We get incredible support from our communities with armfuls of donations so we’re always busy behind the scenes and on the sales floor. The heartfelt thank-yous that we get, particularly from individuals who are impacted, that’s what warms our hearts and keeps us going.”

The overall goal of the fundraiser is $275,000.

“This is such a great example of how small acts can create a huge impact, with one household donation at a time or one small purchase at a time. This amazing group of volunteers continues to improve our community for the better,” Kate McBrearty, the executive director of the VJH Foundation, said.
