Parking fees waived in downtown

Dec 6, 2019 | 9:27 AM

You won’t have to plug the parking meters on Saturdays this month in downtown Vernon.

The city has granted the Downtown Association (DVA) seven free parking days for the year, four of which are being used in December, starting this Saturday.

“Parking should be the last thing that deters people from enjoying the heart of our city this holiday season,” said Dudley Coulter, DVA Events and Promotions Coordinator.

Coulter thanks the city for approving the DVA’s request for free parking.

“We appreciate the city’s understanding that free parking can encourage some people to shop local.”

The free parking will be in effect for December 7, 14, 21 and 28.

Two-hour time limits still apply.

Meantime, the DVA has announced a customer appreciation day for this Saturday.

“There will be one-day sales, downtown-wide free parking, sidewalk performers and a hot chocolate challenge,” said Coulter.

The event, which is the final and fourth instalment of the 2019 series, is popular amongst people looking for unique items.

“There are currently 15 shops and boutiques taking part by offering one-day sales with offers ranging from 10-50 per cent off,” stated Coulter.

There will be a hot chocolate challenge taking place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at five cafes. The popular event that allows people to taste hot chocolate recipes and vote for their favourite.

“There are 150 hot chocolate passports available and they can be picked up for free the day of the event at any of the participating businesses or at the DVA tent located outside 3334 30th Avenue. They will likely all be picked up before 11:30 so arrive on time.”

In addition to free parking, sales and a hot chocolate challenge, there will also be sidewalk performances in the 3000 and 3300 blocks between 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
