Update: Cat dies in modular home fire

Dec 5, 2019 | 11:06 AM

Update 1 p.m.

A modular home under renovation was damaged by a fire this morning on Elmwood Road in the Swan Lake area, north of Vernon.

BX-Swan Lake Fire Chief Bill Wacey says the original call was for a structure fire in the area of Meadowlark Road.

“When we arrived, we could not find it at first. We found out it was further down the road on Elmwood,” Wacey told Vernon Matters.

Wacey says there was smoke coming out of the eaves when his crews arrived.

“We found a back draft situation with the windows bowed-out and smoke coming out from the eaves. We got set-up and entered the house and managed to extinguish the fire that was in a kitchen area.”

Wacey says no people were in the home at the time, but a cat was.

“We managed to find the cat and we administered oxygen to the cat but unfortunately we were not succesful and the cat passed away.”

The chief believes it was caused by an electrical issue with a stove.

“There was pretty heavy damage to half the house,” Wacey added.

The residents had just moved into the home last weekend.
