Vernon CMHA launches annual Gift of Hope campaign

Dec 4, 2019 | 1:47 PM

It’s the season of giving and the CMHA Vernon and district branch has launched its annual Gift of Hope campaign.

The CMHA aims to raise $25,000 in monetary donations and small gifts for approximately 200 people living with a mental illness in the community.

Serving approximately 600 people every month, the CMHA provides early intervention and suicide prevention courses for youth and adults. They also provide programs on recreation and wellness, workplace training, subsidized meals and offer affordable housing.

Donations to the CMHA also help support the 24-hour crisis line, which the CMHA Vernon operates seven days a week.

“For those who are able to help financially, we want them to know their donations go a long way,” Executive Director Julia Payson said.

  • $25 sponsors a mental health education course for low income parents.
  • $50 sponsors a youth or senior to join a mental health fitness course for a month.
  • $100 sponsors a youth for a peer support and life skills program for 2 months.
  • $250 sponsors a suicide prevention course for parents and caregivers.

Those wishing to donate small gifts can drop off items such as scarves, gloves and toques, pyjamas, toiletries, crosswords/word searches, pens, small games, or gift cards in small denominations of $5 to Tim Hortons, A&W or Subway.

Vernon drop off locations include CMHA’s Vernon office at 3100 28th Avenue, All Saints Anglican Church, Hunters Store, Public Health Unit, Nolan’s Pharmasave, St. James Catholic Church and the Tolko main office.

A local business is also helping raise funds for youth throughout the end of December. Simply Delicious Natural Foods Market is offering customers the chance to win a year of free groceries when they add a CMHA donation to their purchase.

Donations to CMHA Vernon and District can be made securely online at www.cmhavernon.ca, by calling 250-542-3114 ext. 224, and in-person at 3100 28th Avenue, Vernon, BC V1T 1W3 Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. or by mail.
