RCMP Appreciation Day marches forward

Dec 4, 2019 | 5:15 AM

Greater Vernon’s RCMP Appreciation Day Committee is inviting the community to what it’s calling an important announcement.

The event will be held at the Greater Vernon Museum at 2 p.m. on Dec. 17.

“A number of local dignitaries will be in attendance to show their support including Victor Cumming, Mahor of Vernon, Eric Foster, MLA for Vernon-Monashee, and Mel Arnold, MP for North Okanagan Shuswap,” says a release from the committee.

The committee has been working to have Feb. 1, 2020 declared RCMP Appreciation Day to commemorate 100 years since the police force was created.

“To help get in the spirit and show your support for local RCMP members, we encourage everyone joining us to wear something red.”

Organizers say on Feb. 1, 1920, the Parliament of Canada created the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, combination of the Northwest Mounted Police, 1873, and the Dominion Police.

“On behalf of the 153 communities serviced by local detachments in B.C. we ask that you take this opportunity to express our appreciation to the men and women of the RCMP,” added the committee.
