Arnold gets shadow minister role

North Okanagan-Shuswap MP Mel Arnold has been appointed as shadow minister for fisheries and oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.

Arnold, a Conservative, sits in opposition to the minority Liberal government in the House of Commons.

At the last election, he acted as deputy critic for Fisheries and Oceans so this is a step up in the party hierarchy.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in the official opposition’s shadow cabinet on behalf of Canadians from coast-to-coast-to coast who deserve a strong voice in Ottawa,” Arnold said in a release Friday. “Canadians elected a dedicated Conservative team to represent them in Ottawa and I look forward to working with my colleagues to hold the minority Trudeau government to account.”

Arnold said the Canadian Coast Guard must be adequately equipped and resourced.

In terms of resources, he said “Canada’s fish stocks, fishermen and the supply chains they support require meaningful and balanced policies to survive and flourish.”
