City commended for using e-bikes for staff duties

The City of Vernon is getting accolades for introducing electric bikes into its fleet system.

The city purchased six e-bikes in May which staff have used for a variety of duties.

“Staff have used them for building inspections, site visits, sidewalk condition reports, meetings, events, and other tasks. In the first month, the bikes were utilized 61 times and staff travelled a total distance of 440 km, with an average trip length of 7.2 km,” said Peter Robinson, chief technology officer of the Community Energy Association.

Robinson attended Monday’s council meeting to recognize the city for the project which he says has demonstrated to community members and city staff that travelling around Vernon without a car is possible.

The city received the 2019 Climate and Energy Action Honourable Mention in the Corporate Operations category.

The city created a replicable revolving fund used to finance the corporate fleet of six e-bikes for city business.

“It is a novel approach to education, leadership and the social co-benefits of reducing car usage,” Robinson said. “In September 2018, Vernon council endorsed a Climate Action Revolving Fund and policy, which guides the use of the fund. Carbon tax reserve funds have been designated for climate action projects that help to lower corporate and community GHG emissions. Energy savings from projects are used to “pay back” the reserve fund.”
