The bells will soon be ringing outside local stores.

The Salvation Army will launch its Christmas Kettle campaign Friday, Nov. 22 at Save-On-Foods in the Village Green Centre.

Lieutenant Stefan Reid says the goal is to raise $500,000 for their programs.

“Contributions allow the Salvation Army to continue operating its life-changing programs, such as substance abuse recovery, housing supports, job and skills training, and budgeting and education classes, which help people find a way out of poverty, permanently,” Reid said.

Last year’s fundraiser in Vernon came up short of the half-million dollar goal, raising about $414,000.

Reid said every donation to a Christmas kettle remains in the community to help local people in need.

“We believe that everyone needs an army and that people need to know they are not alone in their struggles,” Reid said. “For more than 114 years in Vernon, and through the generosity of our donors and volunteers, the Salvation Army has restored hope and transformed the lives of thousands in our community. We are unable to do what we do without the generous support of our community and our need this year has never been higher.”

The Salvation Army is asking people to go to their website to sign up for Kettle shifts.

In addition to accepting donations of cash or cheques, two kettle locations will also allow donors to give with their debit or credit cards through tap-and-go technology.

“We are excited to add this feature. Please go to our website to find out where these locations will be,” Reid said.

People can also donate through their mobile devices or computers at www.vernonhouseofhope.com, or by dropping donations off in person at 3303 32 Ave.
