36th annual in 2020

Funtastic on ‘fiscally responsible’ course

Nov 12, 2019 | 4:30 PM

The leader of Funtastic says the non profit sports society is going into the new year looking to build on it successes from this year.

At the group’s annual general meeting, Ryan McGiverin was returned for a second year as president.

He says the installation of an onsite office, a partnership to purchase a stage, and an agreement with the DND for a lease, made 2018 a productive year.

The organization is planning to bring back its community grant program to help non-profit sports-related groups.

“We are excited to build upon last year’s successes,” said McGiverin. “With the additions made to Funtastic last year, the event is on par to be more fiscally responsible. Afterall, the end result of the society is to raise funds in order to give back to the Vernon and area non profit sporting organizations.”

The 36th annual Funtastic Sports and Music Festival will be held June 27-30, 2020 at the DND grounds.

Other returning members on the board are First Vice President Darcy Sochan and Second Vice President Jamie Austin.

Newcomer Umang Patel is treasurer and Corinne Buller takes on the secretary role. Returning to the board are Tim Reardon, Brad Steel, Bryan Quint, Theressa Nakucyj and Greg Wutzke, with newcomers Steve Maloney and David Scarlatescu.

Akbal Mund and Diana Williamson will continue sharing the management positions.

McGiverin says the board and management team will be attending an annual retreat to brainstorm for the upcoming event.

“Expect to see many of the same components, as well as in staying with the trends and suggestions, and some new ideas being implemented.”

The society has hosted Funtastic since 1984, and allowing $1.7 million to be put back into the community.

The organization says registration for the slo-pitch tournament is picking up with slots filling up fast.

“Funtastic is unique in that there are multi tournaments running simultaneously with five game tournaments and four game tournaments, with all skill levels available.

The live entertainment line up is being put together, with an announcement on the performers in the spring.

Anyone wanting to be part of the event on the July long weekend by volunteering, registering a team, or becoming a sponsor at all levels, can contact the Funtastic office at office@funtastic.org.
