Large crowd expected for Remembrance Day service

Nov 8, 2019 | 10:27 AM

A veteran of the Canadian military will be the guest speaker at Vernon’s Remembrance Day ceremony Monday at Kal Tire Place.

Major Jake Flanders of Vernon retired in 2014 after 26 years with the army, airborne regiment, infantry, and intelligence corps.

“It [service] is going to be about the same as last year. We have lots of people from the community helping out. I’m glad we have the Queen Silver Star candidates coming to help out and the cadets of course. The cadets have been fantastic, and also helping with the poppy campaign,” Jennifer Pace, president of the Vernon Royal Canadian Legion branch, said.

Ron Heuman, who has organized the event the last few years — now passing it on to Pace — will be the master of ceremonies.

Pace said attendance at the event grew in recent years.

“Last year, I think, was a record crowd. And it was great to see everyone there, and people coming out with their families. We try to focus a lot on youth through the poppy campaign,” Pace said.

A number of guest speakers, legionnaires and retired veterans, have been going to local schools and seniors homes this week to speak to students and community members.

There will be services in communities around the North Okanagan.
