Playing fire chief for the day

Nov 7, 2019 | 3:25 PM

Four lucky elementary school students got the chance to strap into their booster seats and go for a ride as junior fire chiefs for the day with four members of the BX Swan Lake Fire Department.

In October, BX firefighters taught fire safety to over 600 kids from BX Elementary, Hillview Elementary, Heritage Christian Homeschool and Vernon Christian School. The kids were taught how to stop, drop and roll and how to exit a building in the event of a fire. Teachers at the school also took part, dressing up in firefighting attire and breathing in and out of air packs.

One student from each school was selected as junior fire chief for the day and got to ride off in a fire truck, a favorite moment for one junior fire chief, six-year-old Violet Sawyer.

“I want to be a firefighter when I grow up,” she said.

The BX Swan lake fire department has been running the fire safety program for 14 years and strives to keep kids enthusiastic about fire safety.

“The kids go home and remind their parents to check their smoke detectors, and they tell their friends all about their fun day out. We hope that it has lasting effects and creates good habits that they will carry with them,” Fire Captain Kevin Dalgarmo said.
