Spirit Square in Armstrong

Rail Trail North gets start and end points

The official start — and end — points of the Rail Trail between Armstrong and Sicamous have been given the green light.

Armstrong will be using Spirit Square on Pleasant Valley Boulevard as its ‘Kilometre Zero.’

“At our last Rail Trail meeting, Sicamous suggested they wanted an official starting point — or end point — of the trail, and they have a place downtown that they wanted to officially mark as the start at their end, with signage and that sort of thing,” said Armstrong Mayor Chris Pieper.

Sicamous will use an intersection at Riverside Avenue and Main Street at its focal point.

Pieper told Vernon Matters the long term goal is to have the trail go all the way from Sicamous through the Okanagan.

“But until we get the links made, we’ll have part of Armstrong designated as the Armstrong point, which is our Spirit Square.”

Pieper says the trail — unofficially dubbed the Okanagan Rail Trail North — will be good for everybody.

“When you look at the success of the trail between [Coldstream] and Kelowna, the usage it has, it’s way more than anybody expected. It will continue to get popular, and we’ll have to address it with infrastructure like washrooms, markings and all those kinds of things.”

A committee is overseeing efforts to raise 13 million-dollars to construct the 50 kilometre trail.
