Alternate routes considered

Public gets say on highway traffic plans

Oct 23, 2019 | 1:48 PM

The options for improving highway traffic flow in the Enderby area will be outlined by provincial officials at an open house tonight.

Ministry of Transportation staff will be on hand to answer questions and share a variety of possible options to improve highway safety and efficiency as part of the Highway 97A – Enderby/Splatsin Transportation Study.

The ministry says the highway carries about 14,000 vehicles per day, and up to 18,000 in the summer.

By 2043, the summer traffic could reach 25,000 vehicles a day.

“While busy, the highway currently operates within capacity. By 2043 it will reach capacity, requiring a minimum of two lanes in each direction,” the ministry said.

The open house follows public workshops earlier this year to gather initial input on potential improvements, which could include intersection upgrades, highway capacity upgrades, highway access modifications, alternative routes and traffic control measures.

Among the options being considered is four-laning the highway, developing couplets, or using alternate corridors with several route suggestions to the east and west of the city.

The open house will be held at the Enderby Seniors Centre, at 1101 George Street from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
